Welcome to the 994th Edition of my series. I hope everyone is having a good holiday season so far however celebrated. I suppose my Halloween season is putting the Madness together. Next Sunday in New Castle, I will be ring announcing for Guilty By Affiliation Wrestling. Flyer is in the below section. I will get on with my selections for the week.
The Batman (2022): Matt Reeves wrote and directed this new take on the Batman legend. Robert Pattinson stars as Bruce Wayne aka Batman who must deal with a killer referred to as the Riddler, played by Paul Dano in a much different sort of portrayal on the Riddler that we are used to seeing. He has help in the thief Selina Kyle, played by Zoe Kravitz, though he does not always agree with her methods. Jeffrey Wright, Colin Farrell, John Turturro, Andy Serkis, Peter Sarsgaard, Barry Keoghan, Jayme Lawson, Gil Perez-Abraham, Peter McDonald, Con O'Neill, Alex Ferns, Rupert Penry-Jones, Kosha Engler, Archie Barnes, Janine Harouni, and many others co-star in this superhero film. This probably is not for everyone. Pattinson puts a new spin on the character, like a young, punk kid with his late parents' money prowling as Batman. Luckily, he has Alfred, played by Serkis, to keep him in line. Farrell is very unrecognizable as the Penguin who gets his own mini-series THE PENGUIN which is also very good. This is also more of a Superhero Noir.
Scream 7 (2026): Kevin Williamson directed this latest installment of this franchise. Neve Campbell returns in her role of Sydney who is in another town with her husband Mark, played by Joel McHale, and her daughter Tatum, played by Isabel May. She has built a good life for herself but soon the Ghostface Killer, voiced by Roger Jackson, has returned and is targeting Tatum. Courteney Cox also returns as Gale Weathers who steps up to help Sydney in her latest fight. Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, Anna Camp, Joel McHale, Celeste O'Connor, Sam Rechner, Asa Germann, McKenna Grace, Ethan Embry, Amy Louise Pemberton, and many others co-star in this installment. There are also some cameos from past SCREAM alums. I enjoyed the nostalgia of this film and the story of Sydney now having to protect her family. I also love how the movies reference how a horror franchise is supposed to work.
The Fifth Element (1997): Luc Besson directed and co-wrote this futuristic sci-fi film. Bruce Willis stars as cab driver Korben Dallas who has an unexpected unusual being in Leeloo, played by Milla Jovovich. He learns that Leeloo is the key to saving the world from evil lead by Zorg, played by Gary Oldman. Ian Holm, Chris Tucker, Luke Perry, Brion James, Lee Evans, Charlie Creed-Miles, Tricky, John Neville, and many others co-star in this sci-fi film. This is a lot of fun and has a great looking future environment. Willis shows up very well where he must become the unexpected hero. The other characters in this film are very well done.
Rosey the Robot (1962): This is my short film for the week which is technically the pilot episode of THE JETSONS. William Hanna and Joseph Barbera of Hanna-Barbera fame directed this futuristic animated sitcom. This is where we get to know the family of the Jetsons lead by George, voiced by George O'Hanlon, his wife Jane, voiced by Penny Singleton, their daughter Judy, played by Janet Waldo, and their son Elroy, voiced by Daws Butler. This is when Jane decides to get a robot maid named Rosey, voiced by Jean Vander Pyl. George must invite his boss Cosmo S. Spacely, voiced by Mel Blanc, to dinner. This was the start to a very popular and timeless cartoon series. I don't think much more explanation is needed.
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (1936): George King directed this film which is based on the play by George Dibdin-Pitt. Tod Slaughter stars as the murderous barber Sweeney Todd, murders wealthy and lonely clients for their money. Stella Rho co-stars as Mrs. Lovatt who runs the meat shop below and helps Sweeney get rid of the bodies. Bruce Seton, Jerry Verno, Norman Pierce, Aubrey Mallalieu, and many others co-star in this film. This is a very adaptation of the legend of Sweeney Todd. Most of us know the Sondheim musical of the same name where Sweeney is presented as a more sympathetic figure. In this movie, he is villain to the core and takes absolute pleasure in what he does.
Corridor of Mirrors (1948): Terence Young directed this gothic horror film which is based on the novel by Christopher Massie. Eric Portman stars as the wealthy and reclusive artist Paul Mangin. He soon meets Mifanwy Conway, played by Edana Romney, and forms a relationship with her. Paul also believes that she is a lover from a past life which seems harmless at first but soon becomes an obsession. Barbara Mullen, Hugh Sinclair, Bruce Belfrage, Alan Wheatley, Joan Maude, Christopher Lee, Lois Maxwell, and many others co-star in this film. Young makes his directorial debut in this film while Lee makes his own acting debut in this Hammer film. He has more of a bit role in this film but would later become an icon of Hammer Films. This is a very atmospheric film where we ask questions on reincarnation. It is hard to really explain from there except just to check this one out.
Repo! The Genetic Opera (2008): Darren Lynn Bousman directed this rock musical which is based on a play by Darren Smith and Terrance Zdunich. This takes place in a not-so-distant future where body organs are purchased and meant for repossession of they are not paid. Alexa Vega stars as Shilo Wallace who is a sheltered girl looking for a cure to her rare disease and does not know that her father Nathan, played by Buffy alum Anthony Head, is a repo man. Zdunich, Paul Sorvino, Sarah Brightman, Paris Hilton, Bill Moseley, Sarah Power, Briana Buckmaster, and many others co-star in this musical. I really liked seeing Head in a more starring role and getting to show off his singing talent. Brightman is most known as Christine in the original production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's PHANTOM OF THE OPERA and makes her first film appearance. Please don't run for the hills when seeing the name Paris Hilton. She does pretty good in her relatively small role. This is not for everyone, but has some pretty good rock-oriented music numbers and some great imagery. This is a musical I would love to be in someday.
Black Sabbath (1963): Mario Bava directed this horror anthology film. Boris Karloff hosts this film and co-stars in one of them. This consists of a stalked call girl, a vampire-like creature, and a nurse who is haunted. Michele Mercier, Lidia Alfonsi, Mark Damon, Susy Andersen, Massimo Righi, and many others co-star in this horror film. This has three really good short stories. This is the influence for the legendary heavy metal band Black Sabbath. Quentin Tarantino also cites this film as one of his main inspirations.
Plan 9 From Outer Space (1958): Edward D. Wood Jr. wrote and directed this B-movie that is one of the most iconic B-movies of all time. Locals are being murdered and turned into zombie-like creatures including Bela Lugosi, Vampira, and Tor Johnson. There is also a group of aliens who seem to be involved. Gregory Walcott, Tom Keene, Paul Marco, Lyle Talbot, Ben Frommer, Conrad Brooks, and many others co-star in this classic. Unfortunately, Lugosi died during filming and had a pretty unsuitable replacement. It is easy to see the passion that Wood had for making this movie. This would be a good double feature to go along with ED WOOD which is based mostly on the making of this film.
Midsommar (2019): Ari Aster directed and wrote this horror film. Florence Pugh and Jack Reynor star as troubled couple Dani and Christian. They decide to go to a remote Swedish village with a group of friends. It seems like a really ideal getaway at first but discover the people there are a Pagan cult with some very violent and bizarre rituals. Vilhelm Blomgren, William Jackson Harper, Will Poulter, Ellora Torchia, Archie Madekwe, Henrik Norlen, Gunnel Fred, Isabelle Grill, many others co-star in this film. This is a pretty compelling film which is not for everyone. It is hard to really put this in any more words than what I already have described. If this is for you, maybe have a double feature with THE WICKER MAN. This is available to watch on HBO Max.
Well, that is it for this week but continue on for week three of my segment My Own Madness.
